CASE FILE #8: BODMIN JAIL, BODMIN

Haunted Bodmin Gaol
THE NAVY WING AT BODMIN GAOL

Our analysis is complete and the results are in…

Bodmin Gaol was a charity investigation on behalf of Help For Heroes and was hosted by our friends at GPS. R.O.O.P.R. raised an impressive £260 for the charity (£325 with gift aid), the event as a whole raised an amazing £1,380 (£1,581 with gift aid) and there's still sponsorship coming through!

Two members of R.O.O.P.R. attended the event (Mike & Rick) and used several pieces of equipment including a digital audio recorder and a night vision camcorder. Where possible both devices were running, allowing any evidence captured to be cross referenced during our review process.

ANALYSIS
After initial analysis/debunking of over 8 hours of audio/video captured on location, a total of 123 potential 'hits' were pulled of for further review. After these 123 'hits' were further analysed, 111 were debunked leaving only 12 'hits' which we believe to be of interest.

Note that all video evidence captured was debunked (dust, breath, etc…), as such the evidence we present for Bodmin Gaol is audible and was captured on both the voice recorder and camcorder.

From this investigation on, we will be using our very own R.O.O. SCALE to help us rate how paranormal we believe any particular piece of evidence (or 'hit') to be. The R.O.O. rating assigned considers several factors which includes, but is not limited to: potential contamination (i.e. other groups in the area), previously reported instances of similar activity in the area, number of people who experienced the 'hit' and quality of the 'hit'.

EVIDENCE OVERVIEW
The table below shows the 12 'hits' of interest.  These have been rated from Real (debunked) through to Otherside (paranormal). We have also presented 2 of the 'hits' we debunked as an example of the types of potential evidence we threw out after our second round analysis.

THE R.O.O. SCALE EVIDENCE FOR BODMIN GAOL

As you can see, whilst we had a fair few hits only 2 we believe are possibly of a paranormal origin.  A few of the others had potential, however we couldn't 100% rule out contamination by other groups in the location – as such they were marked down.

EVIDENCE DOWNLOAD
Below you will find links to each of the 14 pieces of evidence captured. For each piece of evidence, we will present two versions of the same audio clip which conform to the following rules:

CLIP 1: ORIGINAL (UNALTERED/UNEDITED)

  • Audio is taken from the digital voice recorder & extracted using Adobe Audition 3

  • A few seconds of audio will be presented before & after the 'hit' to provide context

  • If the 'hit' is a direct response to a question, or we hear/acknowledge the hit on location, this will form part of the audio presented

  • The audio will not be clipped, edited, cut, enhanced or adjusted in any way

CLIP 2: ENHANCED (ALTERED)

  • The 'Original' file (as above) is used

  • The audio may have light 'Hiss Reduction' applied to the entire clip

  • The audio may have up to 10db of 'Volume Gain' applied to the 'hit' itself

  • Other than this, the audio will not be enhanced in any other way unless explicitly stated

Additional notes: Where we believe an EVP has been captured (possible spirit voice), we will confirm what we believe is being said.  To help remove the power of suggestion, this will be obscured from view. To reveal the hidden information click the link titled "Click here to see what we think the EVP says."

Find the corresponding audio 'hit' in the Audio Player to the right of the page -> and decide for yourself … is it Real Or Otherside?

HANGING PIT: CRY 1 – R.O.O.5
01 – Hanging Pit – Cry1 – Enhanced & Original
We initially thought we'd captured a cry at 7 seconds. However, as we were outside and there is a bird noise at 5 seconds we debunked this as animal noise.

OUTSIDE HANGING PIT: EVP 1 – R.O.O.3
02 – Outside Hanging Pit – EVP1 – Enhanced & Original

This EVP occurred just outside of the Hanging Pit, as Mark (resident historian) was just locking the gate to the pit.  No one was speaking at the time and there were no other groups in the area, as such it's rated as a R.O.O.3. Please note that we also applied noise reduction to the enhanced file, simply because the EVP is so clear in its Original format.

NAVAL WING: WHISTLE – R.O.O.4
03 – Naval Wing – Whistle – Enhanced & Original

These whistles occurred in the Naval Wing at 8secs and 10 secs.  We were asking out for whistles, no one was speaking at the time however there was another group in the area, as such it's rated as a R.O.O.4

NAVAL WING: EVP 2 – R.O.O.4
04 – Naval Wing – EVP2 – Enhanced & Original

This EVP occurred in the Naval Wing.  There seems to be a direct response at 4secs to Tammys request for a name to be whispered.  No one else was speaking at the time however there was another group in the area, as such it's rated as a R.O.O.4.

NAVAL WING: KNOCK – R.O.O.4
05 – Naval Wing – Knock – Enhanced & Original

This knock occurred in the Naval Wing at 5 seconds and was a direct response to a request for a knock.  Also, if you listen carefully, you can hear a slight groan straight after the knock response.  No one was speaking at the time however there was another group in the area, as such it's rated as a R.O.O.4.

NAVAL WING: EVP 3 – R.O.O.3
06 – Naval Wing – EVP3 – Enhanced & Original

This EVP occurred in the Naval Wing. At 2 seconds you'll hear the EVP, at 3secs the voice you hear in the background is Group B and the voice at 4secs is Tammy (our group). Interestingly Tammy moved to the door just after this EVP was captured as she heard something. Whilst there was another group in the area, you can clearly hear that the acoustics of the EVP differs from both that group and our own, as such it's rated as a R.O.O.3.

NAVAL WING: BLOW – R.O.O.4
07 – Naval Wing – Blow – Enhanced & Original

We liken this noise to the noise you get when you blow across a bottle.  This happens twice at 1sec and 5 secs and was picked up just after Mike had been hearing noises coming from outside the room.  Unfortunately there was another group in the area, as such it's rated as a R.O.O.4.

NAVAL WING: KNOCK/MOAN – R.O.O.4
08 – Naval Wing – Knock & Moan – Enhanced & Original

A clear knock is captured at 10 seconds, with a moan following at 11secs.  All four members of the group heard this, unfortunately there was another group in the area, as such it's rated as a R.O.O.4.

BASE ROOM: WHISPER – R.O.O.4
09 – Base Room – Whisper – Enhanced & Original

If you listen carefully you can hear a 'schew' sounds at 4secs, directly repeating what Mike had said he'd just heard.  Interestingly this tied up with an earlier 'Personal Experience' Rick had in this same location where he'd also heard this whispering (more information on this can be found in the section below).  Unfortunately there was lots of background noise (as we were close to base camp) and Ricks experience was not captured, as such we have to rate it as a R.O.O.4.

3RD FLOOR: MOAN 1 – R.O.O.4
10 – 3rd Floor – Moan1 – Enhanced & Original

A clear moan is captured at 9secs, just after Rick says "camera".  Whilst there was no other groups in the area at the time, we didn't hear the moan when it happened and can't 100% rule out it being Mike (Rick was talking),  as such it's rated as a R.O.O.4.

4TH FLOOR: CRY 2 – R.O.O.5
11 – 4th Floor – Cry2 – Enhanced & Original

We initially thought we'd captured a cry at 3secs (just before we whistle out).  However, it sounds too similar to a bird (Owl), so we debunked this as animal noise

5TH FLOOR: EVP 4 – R.O.O.4
12 – 5th Floor – EVP4 – Enhanced & Original

This EVP occurred on the 5th floor during a group seance.  At 2secs you'll hear the EVP, which happens just after a member of the group says "…up on this floor last time".  We believe the EVP says a womans name (I'd be interested to know the name of the lady speaking), but it is not clear.  Also there was a large group of people present, as such it's rated as a R.O.O.4

NAVAL WING VISIT 2: MOAN 2 – R.O.O.4
13 – Naval Wing – Moan2 – Enhanced & Original

A clear moan is captured at 4 seconds, just after Mike says "watch the (moan) big hole".  There was no other groups in the area at the time and we've discounted reverb as it doesn't happen in any of our other audio from this location. Unfortunately we didn't hear the moan when it happened and can't 100% rule out it being one of us (though we're sure it wasn't), as such it's rated as a R.O.O.4.

NAVAL WING VISIT 2: EVP 5 – R.O.O.4
14 – Naval Wing – EVP5 – Enhanced & Original

This EVP occurred during our second visit to the Naval wing (where we had so many earlier hits).  This time it was just Rick and Mike.  At 3secs until around 5secs you'll hear the EVP, which happens just after Rick says "ok, lets try that again".  Whilst we were alone, we were outdoors (you can hear the birds chirping) and there were pigeons around (though the pigeon sounds captured sound very different to this), as such it's rated as a R.O.O.4.

PERSONAL EXPERIENCES
Both Rick and Mike has several personal experiences throughout Bodmin investigation. From knocks, to whistles to bangs, to whispers to cold spots.  Some of these were picked up during evidence review and are presented here, others simply have to go down as personal experiences.  We asked both members to comment on their Personal Experience highlights

Rick

Two Personal Experiences stick out in my mind (other than hanging with Leslie Smith that is!).  The first was the whisper that I heard from the corner of one of the rooms by base camp.

We'd already been investigating for several hours and had gone back to base to relax and get a cuppa.  Of course, we'd turned off all the equipment at that point (no point in recording me slurping my tea really is there?) and I decided that I was feeling particularly conformable in the location, so went for a wander.  Feeling very blasé, I entered one of the rooms off of base camp and shouted "come on then, if there's anyone here say something…" and with that there was a distinct whisper from the fall corner, about 6 feet away from where I was stood.

It must have been quite a sight watching me run from the room (for which I will feel eternally embarrassed), it's just that it caught me so off guard that 'fight or flight' kicked in (alas, 'flight' won!).

The second stand out experience  for me was the cold breeze that passed through the centre of the group when we asked any spirit present to run through us.  There was a noticeable temperature change in a cell off of the Long Room, prompting us to ask the spirit to run through us if present.  The cell door was shut and the window was one of the few with a pane of glass still present.  I've never felt a cold spot (rush) like that before and I have to say it was very interesting!

Whether these experiences have a Real Or Otherside explanation, is something I'll be thinking about for a long time to come!

Mike

The investigation at Bodmin Gaol was a memorable experience as it was such an interesting location, we had a number of personal experiences, we pushed our own personal boundaries and we got to meet GPS and Lesley Smith. I have listed some of my key personal experiences below. Whether they were “real or otherside” I am unsure but it has left me with some interesting questions and determined to find more answers.

While on Floor 5 I felt as though my wrist was being grabbed and this then seemed to move up my arm and stop at my forearm. At one point I even had to invoke my own personal protection as I began to feel very uncomfortable. Also, while in the same location, and taking part in a circle of people calling out for spirits, I became increasingly agitated with the person calling out and even at one stage had to fight the urge to tell them to “shut up as what they were saying was doing my head in.” This was particularly strange as anyone who knows me will attest to the fact that I am very chilled and what was being said when calling out was nothing more than anyone else would say when calling out for spirits.

While conducting an investigation in one of the cells in the Long Room we experienced a number of knocks, bangs and whistles some of which were caught on audio and have been presented on this page. Were some of the noises from other groups? Potentially. But there were so many captured it seems unlikely all of them could have been? There was also a feeling of a cold spot running down the middle of the room, potentially caused by a vent, but the cold spot seemed to instantly jump from being in the middle of the room to then begin felt on my neck.

My final experience was when Rick and I returned to the Naval Wing alone to perform an investigation. We both experienced an overwhelming fear of entering the cell opposite even though we had been in the exact same cell earlier in the evening without any bad feelings. Again, was it paranormal or us becoming tired? I am not entirely sure but these were feelings both me and Rick shared.

I visited Bodmin Jail with my family a few years ago, and although I can’t confirm the name of the room or floor we were on I can remember that it was upstairs, long and had several cells in it.  Information provided at the Gaol told us that the further down the room the cells were the closer the inmate was to being hanged.  There were a few mannequins in cells, but not in the end one.  My eldest son went in there with a video recorder, closely followed by myself, my husband and younger son.  We didn’t get a chance to step inside the cell as something rushed past us.  The darkness in the cell was as if it had substance, much denser than the other cells, which could be attributed to the location, and it also felt very different.  The digital video recorder stopped working at that point, although it had new batteries put in that day and it was the only occasion we’d used it in.  A very interesting place to visit, and I aim to return at some point to compare thoughts and feelings.
