CASE FILE #13: BELL INN, BUCKLAND DINHAM

Haunted Bell Inn

THE INVESTIGATION
On Friday 24th June 2011 Real Or Otherside Paranormal Research travelled to The Bell Inn in Buckland Dinham, Somerset to perform a solo investigation at this charming and quaint pub. There have been many reports of activity including a shadow figure, a child called Emily at table 13, another child appearing at the adjacent table and a previous landlord who is said to revisit the pub. After our initial walk round and talk with the owners, Jeremy and Lucy, it would appear the activity never really stops!!!

THE ANALYSIS
While on location we had full access to the bar, cellar and barn and in total we captured around 4 hours of video and 4 hours of audio. After the initial review process we recorded a total of 10 potential 'hits’ which, after secondary analysis/enhancement, was reduced to 2 ’hits’ which we believe to be of interest and are presenting here.

We have classified each piece of evidence, or ‘hit,’ against our R.O.O. SCALE to determine how paranormal we think it is. More details on how we analyze, review and present evidence can be found in the How Do We section of our blog.

EVIDENCE SUMMARY VIDEO
Since our investigation at the London Tombs we have been posting a single video containing all visual and audio ‘hits’ that we capture as we believe this form of posting makes the evidence more accessible and more immersive for you, the reader?

The evidence you see/hear in the video is as it happened on location. The only modification, or enhancement, we have made are volume increases on some of the audio and some scene edits/cuts to provide context or a compressed version of events.

After watching the video – headphones recommended – continue down the page for an in-depth explanation of each ‘hit’, along with our personal thoughts about the location.

… is it Real Or Otherside?

K2 METER (EMF) READINGS
As well as posting evidence we also like to show, wherever possible, other factors in a location that may have a bearing on what people experience or evidence that is captured. With this in mind we will be posting an additional video containing our initial sweeps of the pub with the K2 Meter as we picked up Electro-Magnetic Field (EMF) spikes in the top restaurant area, near table 13 and the kitchen. We are currently working on the video and will upload it as soon as it is completed.

FULL EVIDENCE REVIEW
BARN: TAPS (R.O.O.4 – UNLIKELY)
As Rick and Mike are calling out to any spirits that may be present in the Barn you can hear what sounds like an object hitting something and then another noise as it ricochets on to something else. The noise is also tagged in real time by both Rick and Mike.

We have classified this piece of evidence as R.O.O.4 (Unlikely) as although the Barn is isolated from the rest of the pub, and therefore contamination, we cannot entirely rule out that the noise was not caused by the bar equipment or fridges.

MAIN BAR: (R.O.O.4 – UNLIKELY)
While sat at table 13 – where a child called Emily is said to appear – performing glass divination Rick and Mike both tag that they have heard a noise. The noise is picked up on the camcorder audio, the voice recorder in the restaurant area (some 30 feet away) as well as the voice recorder that is located directly on table 13.

The camcorder and the voice recorder in the restaurant area pick up an eerie shuffling noise but the voice recorder on table 13 picks it up as either a shuffling or sucking noise, depending on who is listening to it.

The volume of the capture would suggest it came from either in between the camcorder and voice recorder on table 13 or from behind the camcorder. Due to this we cannot rule out that it was caused by equipment in the bar area, even though nothing had been heard or captured like it previously during the night, and therefore we have classified the evidence as R.O.O.4 (Unlikely).

PERSONAL EXPERIENCES
As with any investigation there is evidence we can present and moments that have to be put down as a personal experience. Here are some of our personal thoughts on our time at The Bell Inn:

Rick

If I owned a pub, I’d want to own this one. Traditional, friendly, steeped in history… and full of beer! :o )

However, Rick Pool’s the name, ghost hunting’s the game – and on this particular evening I think it’s fair to say that any ghosts rumoured to reside in the walls of the Bell Inn, simply didn’t want to play ball.

Initially I thought we may well capture some activity… The Bell just had that feel about it – and given the amount of ‘visual’ experiences reported, I was really hoping this may be the Holy Grail of Ghost Hunting. Alas, once we became accustomed to our surroundings, the ‘spooky’ atmosphere left us to be replaced only by a feeling of complete ease. We have presented two ‘potential’ hits, but these could be quite easily explained away as ambient noises or noises from bar equipment – only further investigation over successive nights would provide the answer to that. As for personal experiences, again it was very quiet with nothing of note to report.

In summary, the highlight for me was the building itself and the owners. Jeremy and Lucy were lovely, helpful and extremely trusting – for which they have our sincere thanks. The Bell Inn is a fabulous location to investigate, but for me I’d suggest that many of the experiences may well be down to its’ amazing atmosphere, the preceding ghost stories and a healthy dose of EMF (Electro Magnetic Fields) bouncing around the main ‘hot spot’ areas.

I for one look forward to revisiting The Bell Inn, even if it’s just to soak up some of that atmosphere and a pint or two…

Mike

The Bell Inn feels like any “ye olde English pub” should and when Rick and I first walked in we felt it definitely had an atmosphere and that it had the potential for us to capture lots of activity. Unfortunately, as it turned out, the night proved to be extremely quiet and because of this we have only been able to present 2 pieces of evidence, both of which are at the lowest end of our R.O.O. Scale.

Are there supernatural forces at work at The Bell? Based on the evidence we captured, personal experiences and high EMF in some of the areas where activity is said to occur then it is open for discussion. Perhaps the spirits just didn’t want to play, or talk to us, that night?

Regardless of what evidence Real Or Otherside did or didn’t find at The Bell it is a fantastic pub and I would recommend anyone to pay it, Jeremy and Lucy a visit and experience its' wonderful atmosphere for themselves.

A good, fair and honest review, such a shame that The Bell was so quiet on this particular investigation :-( still if nothing else it sounds a great place to have a drink and soak up the surroundings and enjoy the atmosphere of the Inn and the hospitality of the owners. Debs x
