ART OF DEBUNKING #1: SHINING A LIGHT ON THE ‘BLACK MASS’

By now you’re probably very used to seeing how we present our 'potential' evidence of the paranormal, and use this to form your own opinions as to whether what you’re seeing is Real Or Otherside?

That said, what you see on screen is only half the story! For every piece of evidence we present, there are countless others that have been discounted (Debunked) as having a very natural (Real) explanation.  This short series of ‘diaries’ hopes to expand on some of those ‘debunk’ instances, to not only give you more of an insight into how/why they were debunked, but to also demonstrate why we have confidence in the unusual nature of the evidence we do present!

CASE 1:  SHINING A LIGHT ON THE ‘BLACK MASS’

We were actually sent this video footage by one of the Friends of Real Or Otherside, after our ‘open’ investigation of the Ancient Ram Inn in Wotton-Under-Edge.  First take a look at the raw footage, which properties to show a ‘Black Mass’ move into shot blocking (or muting) Max’s image, remaining (and growing) for 22 seconds, before dissipating.

ANALYSIS
On initial view, the footage appears fairly unusual.  However, if you look a little deeper there are certain visual cues to indicate that all is not what it first seems.

The first thing to remember here is that we are investigating in complete darkness, we can't see anything (or very little) with the naked eye.  Indeed the only reason you see an image here is because our camcorders have a ‘night vision’ mode, which allows them to view/record light in the infra red (IR) spectrum.  Each camera is then equipped with it’s own ‘infra-red’ lamp, which whilst invisible to us, allows them to record in complete darkness.

ISSUE 1
Note the shadow cast on the wall behind Max. That’s a shadow caused by the camera’s infra-red lamp (just as you’d get with a std household lamp). Now note how that shadow is cast slightly to Max’s right (from this cameras point of view).  If the shadow were being caused by the IR lamp on this camera, we wouldn’t be able to see it, as it would be directly behind Max.  The only conclusion that can be drawn from this is that the IR light source does not belong to this camera, and is instead to our right!

NOTE SHADOW TO MAX'S RIGHT

ISSUE 2
Just before the ‘Black Mass’ seems to consume Max, look at his shadow.  It elongates, indicating that the light source (which we now know not to be from this camera) is moving away (to Max’s left).  Not only that but you see a very 'solid’ shadow (looking suspiciously like a pillar) moving in from camera right to left, shortly before the ‘Black Mass’ seems to engulf the footage.

ISSUE 3
Sure enough, just before the ‘Black Mass’ dissipates to reveal Max again, you see a similar ‘solid' shadow (all be it now out of focus) moving back the other way (i.e. camera left to right) – indicating that the light source to our right is moving back to it’s original position (pointing at Max).

CONCLUSION
DEBUNKED
All this leads us to just one conclusion.  There was a second camera (Camera 2), with a more powerful light source, located slightly behind and to the right of the person holding this camera (Camera 1).  The person holding Camera 2 is initially focusing on Max, but then pans their camera off to their right for a while, before returning to focus on Max.

The infra red lamp on the Camera 1 is not very powerful, so it relies heavily on Camera 2's lamp to record it’s image.  As such, when Camera 2 pans off of the subject (Max), Camera 1 desperately tries (and fails) to use it’s own lamp to record an image.  Whilst struggling to do so, it jumps in and out of focus, as it no longer has a well lit enough reference point (Max) to focus on.  This gives the impression of a ‘mist-like’ cloud appearing in front of the Camera 1, and then dissipating (as the main light source from Camera 2 returns).

As a final sanity check, we pulled the video from Camera 2 and sure enough, that’s exactly what happened – as you’ll see in this edit where we show both camera angles side-by-side.
