The Ship Inn, Newnham
Reports of self-tying shoes, necklaces that like to knot themselves during the night, bathroom doors with a mind of their own and ‘ethereal’ arguments coming from an otherwise empty room… await Real Or Otherside Paranormal Research, as we investigate… The Ship Inn, Newnham.
Located in Newnham-On-Severn, The Ship Inn dates back to the 17th Century. Its primary use was (and continues to be) an Inn, but is also believed to have had links to local landowner court hearings (Court Leet) in the early 1800’s.
The investigation was held on Saturday 28th January and was the second location on Real Or Otherside’s first ever ‘Double Investigation’ – keeping great company with ‘Littledean Jail’ (the first location… evidence review incoming!).
Along with us for the ride we had two great friends of Real Or Otherside; James Meek and Debbie Mains (Investigator in training). We were also accompanied by James, one of The Ship’s resident ‘staff members’, for his first ever paranormal investigation. Our thanks go out to Carolyn and Adrian for their impeccable hospitality (and awesome bacon butties!)
Adrian and Carolyn allowed us full access to the upper floor(s) of The Ship, including the bedrooms where the most activity is reported, and the function room.
In total we captured 6 hours of video and audio, which included both our roaming and static (locked-off) night-vision camcorder. After the initial review process we'd recorded a total of 22 potential 'hits’ which, after secondary analysis/enhancement, were reduced to 7 ’hits’ which we believe to be of interest (and are presenting here).
We have graded each hit against our R.O.O. SCALE , to provide a guide as to how ‘unusual’ we believe them to be. Ultimately however, only you can decide … is it Real Or Otherside? More details on how we analyze, review and present evidence can be found in our Techniques section.
EVIDENCE SUMMARY VIDEO
Rather than you sitting through the many hours of footage we captured on location (not always the most interesting of viewing to be honest!), we have produced a video containing the evidence highlights from the investigation. It is important to point out however that whilst the footage is condensed into this ‘digestible’ format, what you see and hear is as it happened on location.
The only modifications made during the editing process are volume increases for some of the low-level audio hits, along with minor cuts to provide a compressed version of events, should the event take place over several minutes.
Now sit back, relax, watch the video and decide for yourself … is it Real Or Otherside?
During any investigation we hope to capture hits on our equipment, which we can then present to you as evidence. However, we will often have experiences that don’t get (can’t be) captured by our equipment. We refer to these as Personal Experiences, and present these to you now, along with our thoughts on the location itself:
Firstly I would like to say a big thank you to Nicola from Littledean Jail for putting us in touch with The Ship Inn as well as Adrian and Carolyn at the pub itself for allowing us in to investigate – and for providing amazing burgers and bacon sandwiches!!!
Adrian and Carolyn called upon our services as they had had reports of people staying in Room 5 who, when they woke in the morning, found that shoelaces had been tied and necklaces tangled. There were also reports of arguing being heard in the room when no-one was in it as well as shadow figures in the hallways and, more recently, doors appearing to shut by themselves when people approached the handle.
We hoped we would be able to capture some of these occurrences during our time there and be able to give Adrian and Carolyn some thoughts, and hopefully footage, of what might be happening on their premises!!!
Over the course of the night, in various rooms, we had some interesting torch activity as well as knocking – the latter of which seemed to respond when Rick was asking for help to remove the “drunks” from the pub!!! Alas a lot of the torch activity did seem to appear at random, rather than directly communicating with us or answering our questions, so these had to be omitted from the final evidence video. I think the most interesting evidence was captured by the Ghost/Franks Box in Bedroom 2 as after asking if they could tell us when they were born we could hear during the evidence review process, but not at the time, someone say “born” which is followed up with “seven/seventy” and “six.”
The Ship Inn was an interesting location and some of the evidence we captured does have the potential, with further study, to be classed as ‘haunted.’ I would definitely be interested in returning to see if we could recreate our evidence, to show it didn’t have a Real explanation, and to try and catch the shoe lace / necklace phenomena on film.
Perhaps over our last few ‘quiet’ investigations I have become a little closed off? So, with this in mind, if spirits (or ghosts, entities or whatever you wish to classify them) exist and are conscious beings who are able to communicate with us could it not just be that, as this was the first investigation held at the pub, they were being inquisitive about what we were doing and didn’t really know how, or whether, they should communicate with us?
First things first. The Ship Inn serves the best tasting bacon I have ever had… FACT! Ok, now we’ve got that out of the way, and as Mike has already thanked our gracious hosts, lets talk paranormal!
We’ve been to dozens of ‘inherently spooky’ locations over the past few years, from Castles to Tombs and even Dungeons. So it’s always quite grounding to investigate a location that doesn’t present ‘suggestive’ paraphernalia at every turn – allowing you to concentrate fully on the investigation itself.
That’s exactly what The Ship Inn offered. A newly renovated and welcoming location, that is not only is called ‘home’ by some of the live in staff, but is someone’s business, livelihood and I’m sure an important social centre for the residents of Newnham-On-Severn. Scratch just below the surface however, and you discover it’s lengthy history, along with stories of strange happenings within its walls. As such, we were very excited to be given the opportunity to be the first paranormal group to investigate this great location.
For me, the Ship felt very calm and relaxed all night. Evidence wise, we did catch a few disembodied knocks which I found interesting, especially as at the time we were trying to communicate with Hannah Purnell the resident Inn Keeper in 1891. Then there was the potential torch communication. In the main this seemed somewhat sporadic, but there were deffinately some interesting ‘hits’ which we pulled into the evidence review video.
It’s interesting as a believer would argue that this ‘sporadic’ performance was perhaps because the spirit was weak, or not used to their home being invaded by ‘logo-clad’ Ghost-Hunters with gadgets galore… whereas a sceptic might say it’s simply because there wasn’t a spirit there at all, it was just a faulty torch (or in this case, three faulty torches, as all came on at some point during the evening). I’m still not sure where I stand on the whole torch debate to be honest; I think time will tell for me.
When you sit back and look at all the evidence captured at The Ship Inn, there are definitely interesting elements, which could indicate some form of paranormal activity. As such I would actively encourage Adrian, Carolyn and the staff/customers of The Ship to continue to keep records of their experiences, and maybe even invite a few other research groups in to see what experiences they have.
As for Real Or Otherside, we’d love to return at some point to continue our investigation… (and I say that with no second-thought given to the awesome bacon butty… honest!)
I like to try to keep an open mind on these things and I’m the first to attempt to provide a rational explanation for events which might at first be considered more Otherside than Real, but I have to admit that I experienced a genuinely unnerving feeling in Room 5 of the Ship Inn.
I had attempted to describe it in several ways but Mike came up with ‘static’ and that’s a pretty good single-word summary for the feeling when every hair on ones body stands on end simultaneously. The fact is that this feeling seemed to occur at precisely the same time as the torches on the bed illuminated. At times, it was almost as if there was some attempt at communication but certainly nothing coherent.
The torches put on another show for us in the function room and at times appeared to respond to questions. Again, the lack of consistency in the illumination of the torches left me unconvinced as to the existence of any paranormal entity but at the same time fascinated by what I had seen.
